ST MELLONS- CARDIFF
Following an extensive and rigorous selection process through Cardiff and Vale Health Board, in spring 2020 we were asked to deliver a specialist Glaucoma clinic on behalf of UHW.
Our specialist optometrists conduct a battery of hospital grade examinations on patients sent to us by their Glaucoma consultant at UHW. With the input of our clinical team and the data they provide, the Glaucoma consultants can then review the episode and manage the patient remotely as the examination details including OCT scans can be transmitted in real time via a sophisticated and secure NHS IT system. This means that patients can access first class service closer to home in a timely manner.
From our practice in Newport, we run a specialist Glaucoma clinic on behalf of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. We were very proud in late 2014 to have been one of only three optometry practices in the whole of the health board to launch the Glaucoma Optometric Diagnostic and Treatment Centres (ODTCs). This innovative new shared care service was widely reported in the industry press and has proven to be hugely popular and successful with patients and professionals alike, significantly reducing the burden on the hospital eye service and providing a high quality, safe and convenient service close to home for many glaucoma sufferers and glaucoma suspects.
This scheme means that a large number of glaucoma patients and suspects are monitored in our practice, all of the in depth examinations which are usually done in a hospital setting are done in our practice and the consultant ophthalmologist at the hospital can then review the results and manage the patient remotely. This means that only those who really need to be seen in the hospital setting are seen there, which leads to more capacity in the hospital eye department. Another benefit of this is that, due to extra capacity in the ODTCs, patients are seen when they are due and are usually on their way home within an hour of their appointment time.
If you have been referred to us by the hospital then we will contact you via telephone and post to arrange your appointments. If you think you have been referred to us and have not yet been contacted by us, please don’t hesitate to pop in or give us a call on 01633 266566.
