If you live in Wales and have an eye problem that occurred suddenly (acutely) which you think requires attention, or if your GP has referred you to us with an eye problem you are entitled to a free examination under the WECS/EHEW scheme.
You can have an EHEW if you:
Have been referred by your GP because of an eye problem
Have sight in one eye only, i.e. you are effectively blind in your worse eye and are over 40 years old
Have a hearing impairment and are profoundly deaf and are over 40 years old
Have Black African, Black Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi family origins and are over 40 years old
EHEW Eligibility
If you belong to an at risk group of developing eye problems either due to your family history, ethnicity, current eye problems or you are somebody who would find it particularly difficult if you had visual problems you be seen annually for a completely free and more in depth examination under a scheme in Wales called EHEW. The aim is of this scheme to detect and treat any potential problems as soon as possible to give the best long term outcomes.
EHEW Eye Exam
As part of this examination the optometrist will do everything they do in a regular examination as well as some more in depth tests. It is likely that the optometrist will need to put some drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils so that they can have a better view of the back of your eye. This means that the examination may take a little longer than usual and it is also recommended that you do not drive soon after the drops.
